Just wondering wat makes machines become self aware?

I would like to know the same thing. If anyone has the answer to that question, it is Terminator.

Well... Have any of you written a code, or even seen one? You'll make the explanation more simple if you have

I saw a code once but I never wrote one

Okay. Well, here's a code.
#include <stdio.h> #include <math.h>
void main(){ double i;
printf("Enter Income: "); scanf("%lf", &i);
if (i >= 350 && i < 360) { printf("If you have 0 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $46. \nIf you have 1 exemption, your Federal Income Tax is $39.\nIf you have 2 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $31. \nIf you have 3 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $24. \nIf you have 4 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $17. "); }
else if (i >= 360 && i < 370) { printf("If you have 0 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $47. \nIf you have 1 exemption, your Federal Income Tax is $40.\nIf you have 2 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $33. \nIf you have 3 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $26. \nIf you have 4 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $18. "); }
else if (i >= 370 && i < 380) { printf("If you have 0 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $49. \nIf you have 1 exemption, your Federal Income Tax is $42.\nIf you have 2 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $34. \nIf you have 3 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $27. \nIf you have 4 exemptions, your Federal Income Tax is $20. while(1) { } }
What does it look like to you? Gobble-de-guk? Codes used in advanced robotics are waaaaay longer than that.
Professional programmers master the use of those codes, experimenting with every function; every feature; every line of code until they've perfected each component and mastered putting them together.
But do they completely and truly understand the code? No. Only the computer really understands the codes. The human programmer only memorized the order of some typed things.
Over the years, random lines or parts of codes group together in unexpected ways, making the machine "smarter" than the human expected. And that is the basis of machine self-awareness.

What code is that? Javascript?
What's it for, anyway? is it one from this site?

What makes robots aware? Pure programming; Terminator probably has me beat to this, but nerve processors makes it aware of it's surrounding, color processors, and shape processors make it aware as well.

That provides the simulation of self-awareness. The actual awareness can only be achieved once and only once the computer has actuall "learned" of its own existence. And even then, it doesn't truly have a life force. What code is that? Javascript? What's it for, anyway? is it one from this site? No, it's a coding language called "C++" and it's not for websites - It's used for programs like Photoshop.

Ah! Forgot about the complex programming codes. Bill Gates used that to create Microsoft programming I believe. That's what you can use to create your own computers with. And I mean, programming them, and not having to use Windows. I think.

Yes, that is correct...
A computer or mechanical being becomes self-aware when it realizes it exists separate from the world around it. Difficult to achieve I think.

Babies love mirrors - they are aware of themselves almost immediately. It is a rather rudimentary level of self-awareness but it IS self-awareness. Probably machines will also be like this.

IF a robot was self aware couln't do what it wants like a terminator?

Post by Kei-Lin on Jan 4, 2008 14:40:14 GMT -5
Yes.
On a side note, the Terminators themselves aren't self-aware; Skynet is self-aware and Skynet controls the Terminators.

But yes, Skynet did what it wanted to do, that's what self aware is in a way.
